A 14-year-old boy who lay in front of an SUV at Bloomingdale High School as a joke was run over and trapped underneath the tires, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Dylan Michael Torrie of Brandon was taken by emergency helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, where he was being treated for leg injuries. He was listed in stable condition.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue had to use a heavy truck to lift the vehicle off Torrie, who is a freshman at Bloomingdale High.
The incident occurred at about 3:15 as the school day was ending and students were leaving the campus, the sheriff's office said.
Kelsey Frye was driving a 2004 Grand Cherokee in the student parking lot. At some point when the SUV was stopped in traffic, Torrie lay on the roadway in front of the vehicle, the sheriff's office said.
Frye didn't see the teen, and when traffic began to move, she drove over him.
Although the case remains under investigation, the sheriff's office doesn't anticipate charging Frye, 16, of Brandon. Sheriff's officials said Torrie told them he lay on the ground in front of the vehicle as a joke.
The Hillsborough County School District will conduct a review of the incident.
