Commuters should use extra care this morning as storms that blanketed the Tampa Bay area overnight continue to drop moderate rainfall.
The rain moved in ahead of a front that should pass over the area sometime this afternoon, bringing with it cooler temperatures for the weekend.
Gusty winds, heavy rain and some lightning were at the front of the line of storms, which struck parts of the coast around 2:30 a.m. A shield of moderate to heavy rain followed and will linger in the area for part of the morning, said Leigh Spann, Storm Team 8 meteorologist.
Wind gusts up to 31 mph were felt in parts of Tampa.
More than 500 residents in the area of Fowler Avenue and McKinley Drive are without power this morning as a traffic accident knocked down power lines. Crews have cleared the roads and are working to restore power to the area.
The storms are part of a bigger system that is bringing snow to northern cities and will bring cooler weather to the Tampa Bay area.
By noon, temperatures will reach the mid-70s and by 3 p.m. the area should be mostly dry.
Though some clouds may stick around on Saturday, rain is not in the forecast and high temperatures will be in the mid-70s.
Those highs will drop to the low 70s on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with lows in the low- to mid-50s.
