Clearwater police on Sunday identified a man shot to death outside his home by an officer as 69-year-old David Rocco Diroma.
Police were called to 3018 Merrill Ave. at 4:21 p.m. Saturday after a friend contacted authorities because he was concerned about comments Diroma had made. The friend said the man had said he had no reason to live because of various problems.
When police arrived, they tried to establish communication with the man via a cellphone and his house phone, then via a loudspeaker, but Diroma ignored them.
He then came out of the house with a handgun, police said. He refused police commands to drop the weapon and Officer Brian Rogers fired a single shot at the man.
Diroma was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.
Rogers, a 12-year veteran of the force, was placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine after police-involved shootings.
The Pinellas County and the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorney’s offices and Clearwater homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
