A 23-year-old driver faces several charges after he caused a seven-car crash in June, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
Saeed Ali Williams, of 1127 Marshall St., Clearwater, was charged Wednesday with leaving the scene of an crash resulting in injuries, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving resulting in injury.
Williams was charged in the Pinellas County Jail, where he has been held since August on drug charges not related to the crash.
A Pinellas deputy said he saw a white BMW make an illegal U-turn while westbound on Curlew Road just before midnight June 1. The deputy started a traffic stop, but the BMW fled, the sheriff's office said.
The deputy turned off his emergency lights and did not pursue the BMW, according to the sheriff's office.
Reports indicate the BMW ran at least two red lights before causing a seven-vehicle crash at McMullen-Booth and Enterprise roads in Safety Harbor, the sheriff's office said.
The BMW driver fled on foot and was not apprehended. Several people were injured in the crash and many of the vehicles were heavily damaged, the sheriff's office said.
Investigators took "touch" DNA from the BMW driver's airbag that with other evidence helped lead them to Williams in the Pinellas jail, the sheriff's office said.
