PLANT CITY – Seniors from Durant and Plant City high schools have been named Outstanding Youth of the year by the Plant City Civitan Club.
Jessi Rae Varnum, 18, from Durant High, and Austin Hunt Bruner, 17, of Plant City High, won the honor by excelling academically and in community service.
As winners, they will serve as grand marshals of the March 1 Youth Parade during the Florida Strawberry Festival.
The Civitan Club has organized the parade for 40 years.
Varnum, the daughter of Scott and Kay Varnum, is vice president of student government, a National Honor Society member and was president of the J.F. St. Martin FFA chapter, just to name a few of her accomplishments.
Bruner, son of Kyle and Kim Bruner, is senior class president, National Honor Society sergeant-at-arms and is active in the Future Business Leaders of America, among other achievements.
Civitan Club President Pat Pogue said her organization has been handing out the Outstanding Youth honor for a number of years. Varnum and Bruner were selected because they stood out among their peers, she said. “They’re just outstanding young people who are active in their community, in their schools and their churches,” Pogue said. “It’s incredible what they do.”
