PLANT CITY Discounted registration is under way for a 5K and 10K obstacle run that will benefit the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation and Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce.
The Romp in the Swamp takes place Oct. 12, but for the best rates, register now, hospital foundation Executive Director Jana Butler said. Prices are $60 to $80 until the end of the month, she said.
Butler hopes at least 1,500 runners will participate in the obstacle run in the Lower Green Park Preserve north of Plant City, formerly known as the Cone Ranch. The goal is to raise least $50,000.
Butler said the romp is the brainchild of hospital President Steve Nierman and foundation Vice President David Sullivan. The chamber of commerce agreed to take part as well.
Orthopaedic Medical Group of Tampa Bay is the presenting sponsor.
The 5K and 10K races are for ages 14 and older, are chip timed, and include both natural and manmade obstacles. There are approximately 32 total obstacles in the 5K and 10K runs and participants may run, walk or jog the course as they see fit. The participants will start in waves depending on their skill level. There will also be a wave for couples who want to get married or renew their vows with a notary public, who will be at the end of the course.
There will be two afternoon races of approximately ½ mile with seven obstacles for children ages 5-8 and 9-13. The cost for children's runs is $25.
Each participant will receive a dri-blend shirt and finisher medal, and awards will be given for fastest times, best costumes and largest team.
Parking is $10 per car.
Money raised will benefit the hospital's projects to enhance medical care for the Plant City community, as well as community initiatives supported by the chamber.
