A landmark downtown church has added a new treat for youngsters on its campus: a playground.
The playground was completed recently on the lawn on the west side of First United Methodist Church of Plant City, 303 N. Evers St.
"We have talked about it and prayed out it for years," children's minister Shawna Cook said.
The playground includes slides, swings and a toddlers activity center.
Members of the church made the dream come true by raising thousands of dollars through such fundraisers as bake sales, barbecue dinners and yard sales, Cook said.
She estimates the playground, including the donated metal fence surrounding, it are worth about $65,000. The fundraising started in earnest about two years ago, when Tim and Susie Prescott took on the task, Cook said.
The playground will be used by children who attend Wednesday and Sunday services and special events such as vacation Bible school. Eventually, the church may make the playground available during certain times for all youngsters, providing they are accompanied by their parents.
