Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: Many voters who had received absentee ballots but not returned them and didn't bring them to the polls, those who didn't have their voter card or bother to check their polling place location beforehand, those who moved without changing their address with the Supervisor's of Elections (SOE) office, etc. probably had problems at the polls today. These problems were compounded by the fact that the SOE hotline phone numbers for poll workers to reach the back office were overtaxed and we were therefore unable to confirm information in the registration and voting records databases to allow those people to vote and also ensure the integrity of the entire process. The precinct where I work experienced this problem with 8 potential voters; some were able and willing to wait others could or would not. We had to refer some to the elections office downtown or a couple were able to use other voter's internet enabled phones to check for information on the SOE website.
It is my opinion that the unfortunate move and expense to optical scan voting meant all polls don't have a laptop and a connection to SOE like those used during early voting which would have all but eliminated these problems. In addition the optical scan machines allow for voters to under vote with no warning and approval with exception of a completely blank ballot; a severe deficiency in the current machines that should have never allowed them to be certified to be used anywhere; much less in counties whose touch screen machines provided multiple safeguards against unintentional or mistaken under or over voting.

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: I was EXTREMELY disappointed that there was anywhere from 5 to 15 children under the age of 5 running around the polling booths playing, screaming, and squelling at the top of their voices (that made it dificult to concentrate on the wording on all of the amendments to be voted on).

My question is who do I contact to ban children from the polling stations. I can't help but think that
someone instigated this to keep the public from being aware of the wording of said amendments to be voted on.

After all only registered voters are to be at voting stations. Am I to file a lawsuit against the election site just to see to it that the law is observed in this matter?

Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
D. Anderson

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: Stone Age Voting System thanks to Buddy Johnson!
The paper ballot was ubsurd because a few cry babies
can't deal with technology. I had to wonder "will my vote count? as I left, the guy in front of me filled his
ballot out incorrectly, so it caused the scanner to
freeze up, and chaos erupted, my ballot and the longline
behind me got shoved in a slot, with the "we will scan it later" kiss of death. Can I have a refund on the touch screen machines we paid for?

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: Pct 526 (NW Hillsborough), voted around 7:15am

This location only had one optical scanner and it did not work! We were told that they were trying to get to their tech support staff on the phone.

When asked about a plan "B", we were told we could either wait or they would collect ballots and scan them tonight...

Originally, when asked how they would be handled, we were told that the 'sealed' box (where the scanner feeds ballots into) had two sides, scanned ballots on the right and unscanned ballots on left. However the precinct official was placing the unscanned ballots into a manila folder...

Will they all be properly scanned, will someone decide that some are invalid, or will some or all be misplaced?

Right now, I don't know my vote will be counted!

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: PRECINCT 965 - I went to vote this morning shortly after 8 AM. I signed in, received my ballot and went to vote. After I'd voted on both front and back of my ballot, I tried to open it to get to the remaining amendments and referendums. To my surprise there was not another page. I found a volunteer and expressed my concern over the missing material. The woman explained several others had raised the same issue but that we had received the proper ballots. I continued to express my concerns stating a couple items were specific to hillsborough county. The woman again just shrugged her shoulders and explained that "they must have removed them at the last moment". I was then "ushered" to post my ballot into the scanner and it was obivous the volunteers were not going to listen to any more of my concerns nor where they going to do anything about it. I went on and posted the one page of my ballot reluctantly.
Once I returned home, I contacted the Supervisors of Elections office and after speaking with 3 different people I was then put in contact with a supervisor. She took my information and pulled up a sample ballot that was to be used at our precinct. I explained to here what pieces were missing that I was not able to vote on. She was appalled that those items were missing.
Unfortunately, since I was required to submit my partial ballot there is nothing I can do at this point, but the supervisor did say she would look into it and then contact me.
I also spoke with my husband, who voted before I did. When I questioned him, he realized he too was short changed on his ballot.
Based on what I'm seeing on the news, this is not isolated to just one precinct.

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: Kelsey Duncan says that while jogging in July, she came across a voter registration table manned by Barack Obama supporters and signed up to vote.

Duncan, 19, is from Oklahoma originally, but wanted to take part in the pomp of Election Day instead of just mailing in a ballot.

Besides, says the Florida Southern College student, "I figured my vote would count more here."

While filling out the registration, she says she started chatting with the people taking registrations.

"I registered as a Republican," she says. "I was raised a Republican. One of the ladies said, 'oh, look, we got another Republican.' I didn't think anything of it."

Until today, that is.

Duncan says when she went to go vote in Lakeland this morning, she was told fuggetaboutit.

If she filled out a registration, it never made it to the supervisor of elections office.

She says she filled out a complaint this morning, and a provisional ballot, but realizes that it is a lost cause.

"I am very upset that I am not able to vote," she says. "They took away my right to vote."

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: When I presented my drivers license to the check in person this morning I was informed that I could NOT vote because I was previously sent an absentee ballot... I informed the person that I did request an absentee, but I did not receive it and I wanted to vote... She then referred me to another person at a seperate table... After explaing this to the second person they attempted to contact someone downtown several times and was not able to get through... After several minutes of people exchanging "what should we do" I was told that I could complete a provisional ballot, which may not be considered by the judge... They explained that if a provisional ballot is cast it is subject to review by a judge and others... When I asked how could I find out if my ballot was considered I was informed that I would have to contact the county seven(7) days after the election to find out... I have no idea what happend to the ballot that they claim was sent, all I know is that I did not receive it... I wonder how many others had to go through this?? I also wonder how many will not question it??? This is a said state of affairs and I can not believe something this important is not handled more professionally.. Signed -a very disapointed voter!!! Gary W. Davis... note: I cast my provisional ballot at Grace Baptist Church on Van Dyke Rd...

Pinellas, FL - Voting Experiences :: We picked up another couple to bring with us to the polls. We feel that this is important because everyone has the right to vote. We got to our designated polling place on central avenue in st pete at a church. Walked up to the door, they checked to see which district we were in and pointed us to the correct line. They checked our ID and card, then sent us to a second step to "fill in the little circle" and sign again. I think this is an intelligent step as they told people if the circle was filled in improperly and explained the proper way for the vote to count. Gave us our two sided ballot (we didn't have a lot of extras in our area) and we went to our booths. My only complaint was the sturdyness of the tables - they were a little shakey but it worked. No problems with the scanners. 4 of us were in and out in less than 15 minutes. No lines, no problems, no rudeness, just one great experience.

I love the voting process. As long as everyone does their civic duty and votes according to their conscience, then democratically, the winner is chosen.

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: Needless to say, the line was LONG, but getting it done was wonderful. I voted for me, for my family, for my lovely daughter, for my mother who is gone for too many years. Most of all, I voted because I could - and that is what our country is all about. Voted at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave. I am handicapped, and the help I received made it possible to vote. Without their help, I couldn't have stood in line and made it inside to vote. The people manning the line made sure it went smoothly, and they were absolutely outstanding. I was able to meet the person in front of me, the person behind me, and met them again when the line met up with me inside. I was able to sit inside and wait until my place in line came along. I also read 180 pages in my book, and that translates to about a 2 hour wait. AND WORTH IT!!!!

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: I had an absentee ballot, but decided to go wait 3 hours to vote after I got a voice mail from Obama's campaign, offering to come pick up my ballot if I could not turn it in on time. Kind of made me leary of the absentee ballot service. I wanted to make sure my true vote counted. Luckily the people in line in front of me and behind me were great company to be with. Unfortunately one guy who ordered pizza in line, did not have enough to share with everyone.

There was limited parking and people parked on the shoulder along the road. Last year more poling places were open and this did not happen.
Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: My sister and I voted Wednesday Oct. 29 at the Southshore Library located on 19th St. in Ruskin. The wait time was 45 minutes and the staff was helpful and polite. Unfortunately, my voting experience was mared be a group of Obama supporters standing directly outside the polling area doors, directly asking each person if he/she were voting for Obama and also handing out literature regarding their candidate. After I informed the polling staff, the offenders were asked to leave. I am wondering if the more appropriate response would have been to have them arrested. I take my right to vote very seriously and felt the harrassment was both intimidating and rude. I was under the impression that there is a 100 ft. rule from the polling doors regarding campaigning. I truly feel violated. Shame on the Obama pushers that were present at that time!!!!

Sarasota, FL - Voting Experiences :: Yesterday, my almost 85 yr old mother & went to vote. I registered to do assistance for my mom as her eye sight is failing and she is in early stages of dementia.
The poll workers requested that I vote first then assist my mother, however for some reason my ballot did not print. The poll workers then suggested that I go ahead an assist mom while they reprinted my ballot, no problem. They provided a chair away from the line & voters while we waited on my ballot. Then a worker approached us and wanted to know what we were doing in there, so I explained. He immediately informed me that my mother would have to exit the building, when I tried to tell him that was no pheasible he became even ruder and when I let him know that I was not going to leave without voting his response was "We'll see about that".

Apparently he went to summons assistance to kick my mother out of a building that she was unfamiliar with in 40 degree weather, 2 workers ushered mom & me to an area that I could cast my ballot and have mom right next to me.

Living in Sarasota County especially but anywhere, there should be provisions for the assistants of special needs voters so that this doesn't happen again.

Hopefully, it was an isolated incense but it was very upsetting to my mother, who felt like she had done something wrong. Not good.

Pinellas, FL - Voting Experiences :: I voted about 3-4 weeks ago by mail. I work all day and then I go to class at USF for my Master's. My teacher is very strict about punctuality, so I was not going to have time before work, after work, before class, or after class to vote. So I decided to vote by mail. I already knew who I was voting for and I knew that nothing would change my mind. It felt strange to vote in my bedroom and then put my ballot in an envelope and in the mailbox. I am also left wondering if my vote ever got to where it needed to because sometimes our mail system is not all that dependable. I somehow missed the memo about being able to physically go and vote early. I thought my only way of voting early was to do it by mail.

Pinellas, FL - Voting Experiences :: Husband and I both voted last Friday afternoon at the 501 Building in downtown St.Petersburg; approx. 35-40 people in line ahead of us (about 10 ppl inside in line and approx 30 outside); lined moved fast; easy in/out probably 30 minutes max. There were plenty of voting booths and 2 machines; did not witness any problems. Much smoother and more organized than primary voting at precinct. Will continue to vote early in person at same location for future elections. Friends who work in the building say that the line is steady with a constant line around the building.

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: I voted on Friday, 10.24 at 9:30am at the Buddy Johnson Election Office on Faulkenburg Rd. The wait was 1 hour and very much worth it. I noticed nobody in line talked about politics at all. I had my 'Tribune Voting Picks' cut out of the paper and with me, It was very helpful in some gray areas where I was unsure. I also brought along with me my filled in sample ballot to expedite the process.

Hillsborough, FL - Voting Experiences :: I never thought in my life time or the in life time of my grandchildren would I be this close to seeing a Black Man become President of the USA. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, this is your dream come true! I've been to the mountain top 2 but I must've been viewing the USA out of "dirty glasses".

I requested an ABSENTEE BALLOT, based on my past experiences of living in Leon County, Tallahassee, Fla during the 2000 Election. Voters were intimidated at the polls and many eligible voters were disenfranchised. As a former State employee, I received e-mails advising state employees to vote but as a reminder, "who do you work 4"? Jed Bush was the governor of Florida and his brother was running 4 President.

I chose 2 vote early! I reviewed my ballot in the privacy of my home. When I completed the 2 page ballot, I signed my name, made a copy; the voting machines STILL do not generate receipts! I can get a receipt at the corner gas station store! Florida has NASA;THEY PUT THE LAND ROVER ON MARS but I can't get a receipt when I vote! I spent $1.00 in postage and dropped my ballot in the mail. Florida has a history of voter irregularities and I hope my vote is actually counted. I have NO WAY of knowing.

The entire voting process needs 2 be overhauled. In Europe, voters cast their votes using the telephone and the Internet! Voter participation is about 90%. Voting is a requirement and voters stay involved because the issues affect them directly.
