THE RIDE: Two-door, four-passenger 2009 Infiniti G37 luxury sports coupe and four-door, four-passenger luxury sedan.
DOWN THE ROAD: Whether you fancy a G37 sedan or a coupe, there is abundant power at your command. The vehicles' ability to lurch forward in an instant will surprise most new drivers of the quick ride. So go light on the pedal when you first step into the car.
TECH & PERFORMANCE: Both are equipped with an imposing 3.7-liter DOHC V-6 engine. However, the coupe blasts off 330 horsepower at 7000 rpm while the sedan tops at 328 hp at 7000 rpm. Pounds-feet of torque is 270 at 5200 rpm in the coupe and 269 at 5200 rpm in the sedan. Power reaches the wheels via a slick-shifting 7-speed automatic transmission with sport mode. Push the round start button and you will be welcomed by a loud, throaty growl. The independent front double-wishbone suspension and a rear multilink system is equipped with stabilizer bars. The power rack-and-pinion steering system is precise and linear. Braking duties in the rear-wheel-drive vehicles are handled efficiently by 12.6-inch vented discs in the front and 12.1 inches in the rear.
LOOK & FEEL: Contributing to the vehicles' aggressive stance is a double-arch chrome grille with L-shaped HID xenon headlights, wave like aluminum hood, G-style LED tail lamps and dual chrome exhaust tips. Step into the cabin and you will find the recognizable Infiniti "double-wave" instrument panel and analog clock. The center console, instrument panel and doors are adorned in aluminum-alloy trim. I like the convenience of a push-button ignition with the key fob in our pocket. Same applies to the standard, well-bolstered eight-way power driver and front-passenger seats. Also improving the driver's confidence are the hand-stitched leather three-spoke steering wheel and shifter knob with aluminum trim. Other standard features are dual-zone automatic climate control, 7-inch LCD display, 6-disc CD player and XM Satellite Radio.
SAFETY FIRST: Standard features include dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag for both rows, four-wheel antilock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, Vehicle Dynamic Control, traction control, front and rear crumple zones, front seatbelts with pretensioners and tire pressure monitoring system.
OUT THE DOOR: $36,650 for the coupe and $33,700 for the sedan, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges.
BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, P225/50R18 (coupe), P225/55R17 (sedan); wheelbase, 112.2 inches; length, 183.1 inches (coupe), 187 inches (sedan); weight, 3,642 (coupe), 3,590 pounds (sedan); fuel capacity, 20 gallons; city, 18 mpg; highway, 26 mpg.
WHY DIG IT: Regardless of the model you pick, the G37 is an entertaining and competent car to drive. Apart from being a quick and awe-inspiring performer, the G boasts a top-notch interior and standard safety features. We can't wait to check out the G convertible, which should hit the streets shortly.
