A 32-year-old Ruskin man died Saturday night when he was struck by a pickup after he had stopped to help others who were involved in a crash on U.S. 41.

About 10:19 p.m., Angel Hernandez was southbound on U.S. 41 in a 2003 Ford F-150 in the inside lane, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Chad Louis Ries had stopped his 2012 Volkswagen Routan in the outside lane of U.S. 41, north of Mirabay Boulevard.

Ries, who had stopped to help the drivers involved in a two-vehicle crash, was hit by Hernandez as he got out of his car, FHP said. Ries passenger, Christen Carron Ries, was not hurt.

Ries died at the scene.
