TAMPA - The Tampa Bay History Center hit a major construction milestone Tuesday, and museum officials promise top-notch exhibits when the center opens by year's end.

Workers put the last beam in the center at an 11:30 a.m. "topping out" ceremony. The four-story center is just west of the St. Pete Times Forum and is scheduled to open in December.

The center's exhibits will feature segments of Tampa's history, such as exploration, the cigar industry, the cattle industry and military history.

Judge E. J. Salcines, who spoke at the ceremony, said the museum will display documents and artifacts from the Spanish exploration that are currently housed in several museums in Spain. It will be the first time these items will return to the United States since leaving with the explorers hundreds of years ago.
