The Academy at the Lakes athletic program will have a new leader in addition to a new boys basketball coach when Tom Haslam takes over July 1.
"We're very happy to bring Tom Haslam on board," Academy at the Lakes head master Mark Heller said Tuesday. "He's been an AAU coach for many years and a very successful Catholic School League coach.
"We think he's going to be a great force for the growth of our basketball program and make our new gym just ring with W's and lots of great cheering and lots of great stuff at the academy."
Haslam also will be the school's athletic director, taking over for Mark Arbett.
Haslam will inherit a basketball team that was knocked out of the Class 1A-District 11 semifinals 51-49 by second-seeded Citrus Park Christian. The Wildcats ended the season 8-13.
The squad will lose three seniors to graduation and stands to return as many as seven seniors for the 2009-10 season.
"Tom has great basketball knowledge, great knowledge of kids and he is a great leader," Heller said. "He is very mission-appropriate for Academy at the Lakes."
