Pasco native Chiary falls in super middleweight title bout

As the saying goes, all's well that ends well.

In Brian Chiary's case, however, he may have mixed emotions on that one.

Friday night in the main event of the Ballroom Brawl boxing series at the Westshore DoubleTree, Chiary (10-9-1, 2 KOs) lost his final professional bout by split decision to Loren Myers (8-12-1, 2 KOs) of Fresno, Calif.

On the positive side, Chiary withstood a brutal sixth round that saw him, at one point, take numerous blows to the head, opening his nose like a faucet. On the downside, Myers' win gave him the NBA Intercontinental super middleweight belt, which was vacant and up for grabs.

Chiary, from New Port Richey, said he will now focus on his career as an EMT.

The fight started off well for Chiary, who used the perimeter to set up angles with which to attack Myers. He mixed in several short, thudding uppercuts and left hooks, but as the rounds unfolded, Myers began to find the mark with his own punches.

In the end, Chiary finished the fight on his feet, throwing scoring shots.

Earlier, it took referee Dennis DeBon 39 seconds into the third round to figure he saw all he needed to see in the welterweight fight between Clarence Booth and LaQuel Fleming.

Following a brutal barrage of head and body shots delivered by Booth in front of a capacity crowd, DeBon stepped in between he and Fleming, ending the bout before its fourth and final round.

At the start of the third, Fleming walked into a right hook that stopped him in his tracks. That just seemed like a carryover from the end of Round 2, when Booth dropped Fleming in his own corner with a left to the head. Fleming reached his feet before the 10-count and made it to the bell.

That would be the only thing he beat Friday night.

Heavyweight Chris Barnett's no stranger to the fighting world.

As a mixed martial artist, he was 7-1, winning five of fights by knockout. Friday night in his boxing debut, the result followed the trend.

Barnett landed a whopping left to the head of opponent Michael Greeson, following that with a thudding right. Greeson immediately went to the canvass face-first. He beat DeBon's 10-count, but was visibly unstable in the center of the ring.

After touching gloves with Gleeson, acknowledging his resolve, Barnett ended the fight with a right that sent Gleeson back to the floor. That brought an end to the fight at the 2:12 mark of the second round.

Welterweights Justin Jones and Jean Colon put each other through the ringer for four rounds. That said, it was Jones (2-0, 2 KO) who collected the knockout victory at the 1:46 mark of the fourth round.

In the final round, Colon (0-1) landed several counter shots, but never was the one to set the pace as he did in spots at the beginning of the fight. Meanwhile, Jones used his length to land head shots, then worked his way inside, where he was effective.

The closing moments of the fight began with a left to Colon's head. As referee Emil Lombardi rushed in attempting to the end the fight, Jones' second left beat Lombardi to the punch.

That blow dropped Colon in the corner.

Super featherweight Adrian Perez (7-3-1, 1 KO) collected a unanimous decision victory against Angel Albelo (3-4-2, 1 KO). Albelo spent the bulk of the fight keeping a safe distance and forcing Perez to pursue.

Albelo used that method to set up a sneaky left hand. After circling the ring, Albelo would then take several steps back, in an attempt to time a left straight.

Perez likely earned the win during times when Albelo appeared to rest and fight off the ropes.

Lightweights Yuniel Ramos (1-4-1) and Lee Dawson (0-1-1) fought to a draw following a cut opened up over Ramos' left eye.

Things started off strongly for Ramos. So strong, in fact, his first blow of the fight sent Dawson stumbling into the ropes.

After catching that that left hook to the head, Dawson settled in, doing well not only in the remainder of the round but the fight. In the next round, Dawson answered back with his own hook. That right landed to Ramos' head, buckling his knees.

In the fourth and final round, the accidental head butt caused Ramos to immediately begin pawing at the cut. The action was stopped and after the ringside doctor checked the cut, the fight was stopped and went to the scorecards.
