Since his grandson started a boxing career, "Don" Roberto Serrano had never missed a fight.
Unfortunately, Serrano died two weeks ago. But following the main event at the Ker's WingHouse Fight Night at the A La Carte Pavilion on Friday night, Tampa's Charlie Serrano honored his grandfather with a technical knockout against Steven Johnson in a featherweight bout. The referee stopped the fight 1 minute, 19 seconds into the sixth round.
Serrano (12-2-1, 3 KOs) scored a knockdown in the third round after delivering several punishing hooks to the head and Johnson beat the standing 10 count but never regained his footing. Johnson (7-3) was knocked down again in the sixth and again beat the count, but he couldn't weather another barrage shortly after.
"My pressure wore him down," Serrano said. "I was surprised he took (my punches) really well."
In other events Friday, St. Petersburg junior middleweight Manny Woods defeated Justin Williams by decision and St. Pete light heavyweight Radivoje Kalajdzic made his professional debut with a thrilling knockout against Nyantu Bolo, 34 seconds into the first round.
In a welterweight bout, Joseph Fernandez (2-0-1), from Arcadia, spoiled Jacksonville's Darrell Jones debut by unanimous decision.
