About 20 years late, the Bucs start a Ring of Honor today.
They start with the announcement that Lee Roy Selmon is the first honoree.
You can't start better than Lee Roy.
Where do we go from here?
Well, here's my ring:
Doug Williams is in. He was the first quarterback to lead the Bucs into the playoffs.
Jimmie Giles is in. He remains the greatest tight end in Bucs history.
James Wilder is in. He has some extraordinary numbers for the early Bucs; still leads Bucs in career rushing yards.
Eric Curry does not make it.
Paul Gruber is in, for all those years breaking rocks into pebbles, often for awful Bucs teams.
Charles McRae does not make it.
John McKay makes it, because he went first, 0-26 and all to the NFC title game - and when asked about his team's execution, said he was in favor of it.
Tom McEwen, grand old keyboard knight and Tampa Tribune legend, he makes it, too. There probably would never have been a team here if it wasn't for Tom.
If Tyji Armstrong calls, tell him he did not make it.
And do not give him your current address.
There should be a federal investigation if Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and Warren Sapp don't make the ring the same night.
Tony Dungy gets in by world acclamation.
Ronde Barber is in, for that interception return that night in Philadelphia and much more.
Brad Johnson makes it. The Super Bowl quarterback is in, at least in my ring.
So is Simeon Rice, the real MVP of Super Bowl night. Simeon deserves his moment, and will even return from Mars for the event.
Ricky Bell makes it, on heart strings alone.
The A-Train makes it, of course.
And Mike Alstott should clear a path for Warrick Dunn.
Keyshawn?
No.
Hardy Nickerson?
Yes. He revived defense in Tampa. He walked the walk.
We left out Hugh Culverhouse, which means somewhere there are wolves howling at crucifixes.
We couldn't leave out Jon Gruden. He came, he saw, he pounded rock and won it all, no matter what anyone says.
There are going to be some tough calls.
Richard "Batman" Wood? What about Keenan McCardell (two Super Bowl TDs) and Joe Jurevicius (that catch in the NFC title game at Philly)?
No, no and no.
A couple of years ago, when I first yammered about a Bucs Ring of Honor, I was surprised to find out that there had once been a "Krewe of Honor" under the east stands at old Tampa Stadium.
"They had murals of Lee Roy, me and [John] McKay," Doug Williams told me.
Mr. C was added in the last year of his life. When Tampa Stadium was demolished, the murals went with it.
Now comes the ring.
Selmon, Williams, McKay.
McEwen, Wilder, Giles.
Bell, Gruber, Nickerson.
Dungy.
Sapp, Brooks, Lynch.
Alstott, Dunn, Barber.
Rice, Gruden, Brad Johnson.
Oh, and Josh Freeman - just for good luck.
Got your own ideas?
Let me know. Drop me a line. Phone me. Tweet me. Tweet me right. Or just come by the house. Just make sure Tyji isn't following you.
That's how I see it.
