Though he appears to be leaning toward naming Byron Leftwich his starter, Bucs coach Raheem Morris wanted to meet again with his staff and then with the team and its owners before announcing the choice publicly.
The meeting with his staff is scheduled to take place this afternoon, but it probably will be Saturday morning before Morris tells the team and contestants Leftwich and Luke McCown of the decision.
"We will make a decision here in the near future,'' Morris said. "I don't want to give you guys a date on when it will be. It could be [Saturday]. It could be [after the final preseason game Friday against Houston].''
Morris' comments came a day after the Bucs dropped a 10-6 decision to the Miami Dolphins in which neither starting candidate sparkled. Morris said those performances won't sway him much.
"I probably could have made it last week,'' he said. "But I want to get with all my guys here, my coaches and get their opinions on it first. We'll do that in a little bit here, and then we'll let our team know and our owners know.''
