The University of Central Florida accepted today a bid to play in the St. Petersburg Bowl on Dec. 19 at Tropicana Field, the school announced.

The Knights' opponent will be from the Big East Conference.

The bowl appearance, the program's third in the past five seasons under coach George O'Leary, caps an 8-4 season during which the Knights won six consecutive Conference USA games and beat its first ranked FBS opponent, then-No.13 Houston 37-32 on Nov. 14.

"We are thrilled to have this opportunity to play so close to our fans in St. Petersburg," O'Leary said in a news release on the school's Web site. "Our senior class has done an excellent job leading this team. We've won our last six games in the conference and have eight wins on the season. It will be great to have a large fan base behind us as we go for our ninth victory against a quality team from the BIG EAST Conference. It is a great opportunity and one that I know our players wanted."

The Knights played in the 2008 Liberty Bowl as the C-USA champion and the 2005 Hawaii Bowl.
