NCAA athletes at the University of South Florida will be outfitted with Apple laptops in a first-of-its-kind partnership with the computer company, school officials announced today.
School officials would not elaborate on the details of the partnership or how the athletes will get the laptops. The deal was announced at this afternoon's meeting in Tampa of the state Board of Regents.
USF Athletics Director Doug Woolard proposed the partnership to the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker and it accepted.
The spokesman for Apple's Higher Education group, Michael Hageloh, said at the meeting that athletics was not one of the computer maker's markets, but Woolard "successfully took our 30-plus years of learning experience and applied it to a new community."
Hageloh called the deal "a national game-changing moment led by USF."
The goal is to create an "anytime, anywhere learning environment" where students can view assignments, lectures and other material on a bus, in an airport, anywhere they are, Woolard said.
Every athlete will get a laptop, Woolard said. The computers are expected to be distributed soon.
Editor's note: Earlier versions of this story were inaccurate on the cost of the laptops to athletes.
