The University of South Florida men's basketball team will be without its leading scorer for at least six weeks, maybe longer.
Sphomore forward Gus Gilchrist sustained an ankle injury during practice earlier this week and will be out for an extended amount of time, Coach Stan Heath said Wednesday.
"He severely sprained his ankle," Heath said. "He'll be out until late January, early February; somewhere around there. We'll find out a little bit more some time next week.
"So, with that we'll be working out of four guards and (freshman forward) Toarlyn Fitzpatrick will have to step up. The whole team will have to step up with some more rebounding and scoring."
Gilchrist leads USF with an 18.8-point scoring average and is second in rebounds with 7.4.
Heath also said sophomore guard Anthony Crater's status was still in limbo and he will not join the team this weekend.
"His status will be more defined next week," Heath said, "in terms of when he can join our team."
Crater, who transferred from Ohio State, was to become eligible in time for Sunday's Central Michigan game. A Fanhouse.com report, however, alleged Crater will be suspended and ineligible to join USF until some time in January.
Asked the nature of a possible suspension, Heath declined to answer, saying, "I don't comment on academics. I don't comment on social behaviors."
Heath also announced freshman guard Jordan Dumars, son of former NBA great Joe Dumars, will be transferring to another school closer to home.
"He loved his experience here," Heath said. "He liked being on the team, but he just felt like he wanted to get closer back to home."
Dumars, who is from Detroit, hasn't decided on a new school.
In six games, Dumars averaged 1 point per game.
