Dennis Fryzel, who was the last head football coach at the University of Tampa before the school dropped the sport, has died.
Fryzel passed away Monday morning in Atlanta after a brief battle with renal cancer.
He was 67.
Fryzel was just 30 years old when he was promoted to head coach from defensive coordinator at UT in 1973. He coached the Spartans for two seasons before the program was shut down for financial reasons.
Fryzel later served one season in 1976 as special teams coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later, after stops at Syracuse and the Air Force Academy, spent three seasons as defensive coordinator at Ohio State. He left coaching after the 1981 season and worked in private business.
Funeral services are Thursday in Atlanta.
