Former NBA ref to finish sentence in Tampa

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Tim Donaghy, the former NBA referee convicted of gambling on professional basketball games - including ones in which he officiated - will complete his prison sentence at a Tampa halfway house, according to a prisoners' advocacy group.

Donaghy pleaded guilty in a New York federal court in 2007 on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and transferring betting information through interstate commerce. He was sentenced in November 2007 to 15 months at a federal prison camp in Pensacola.

He will be released from prison on June 17.

Donaghy's release date is in question because he was attacked by another inmate last year, according to a news release by P. Zaranek Prison Consultants. The inmate, who claimed ties to the New York mob, beat Donaghy with a heavy object, the release states.

The firm helps federal inmates in getting reduced sentences or early releases, according to its Web site.

When he is released, Donaghy plans to get treatment for his gambling addiction, reuniting with his four daughters, finding a job and finishing a memoir of his 13 years in the NBA, the advocacy group says.
