The Tampa Bay Buccaneers concluded its first session of mandatory minicamp practice with two players being cautious with their injuries.
Bucs defensive end Gaines Adams twisted his foot during practice and left early, while tight end Kellen Winslow did not go full speed through every drill. Neither injury seems serious.
"I rolled over on my foot," Adams said. "It's nothing major."
Winslow, who is recovering from a staph infection and ankle injury last season, cautiously approached drills that could hinder his comeback. As Winslow participated in a drill with the ball attached to an elastic band, he stopped midway during the exercise when it became too strenuous.
"They put the cone out there far for me and I was like, 'Nah man, I can't go that far,' " Winslow said.
Here are some other notes from this morning's practice:
• Former St. Louis receiver Drew Bennett and Seattle receiver D.J. Hackett worked out for the Bucs this morning. Tampa Bay is still looking to add some depth behind Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton.
&bill: Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Jim Bates said 90 percent of the playbook has been installed so far. Bates expects to rest to be installed during training camp.
• Tampa Bay linebacker Jermaine Phillips said he has not worked out at safety since being switched to linebacker. Bates said Phillips has done well at linebacker, but the player is not satisfied.
"You can't judge yourself at linebacker until you put pads on. Out here, of course I can look good," Phillips said.
• Tampa Bay quarterback Luke McCown said he has zoned out talk about the battle between him and Byron Leftwich and is focused only on making himself and the team better.
"We don't pay a whole lot of attention to what's said or what's written about the quarterback competition because at the end of the day, it's who makes the team better and who goes out and does it on the field," McCown said. "I think you have the mentality that you're going to win the job because if you don't have that mentality, to me, you're preparing for second. When it comes down to it, it's about trying to make the team better. It's what we're all trying to do right now."
Tampa Bay's second practice session will begin at 3:55 p.m.
