Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has assembled the American League coaching staff for this summer's All-Star Game and it includes a pair of relatively new managers.
The Royals' Trey Hillman and the Mariners' Don Wakamatsu will join Maddon and the Rays' entire coaching staff in St. Louis next month. It will mark the All-Star Game debut in any role for both Hillman and Wakamatsu.
Maddon's Tampa Bay staff -- Tom Foley (third base), Steve Henderson (hitting), former St. Louis Cardinals All-Star and 1982 World Series champion George Hendrick (first base), Jim Hickey (pitching), Dave Martinez (bench) and Bobby Ramos (bullpen) -- make up the rest of his All-Star staff.
Tampa native Tony La Russa and Dodgers skipper Joe Torre were named to the National League staff by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.
The All-Star teams are managed by the skippers from the previous season's World Series. Manuel led the Phillies to their second-ever World Series title in five games over Maddon's upstart Rays.
Since 2003, the league winning the All-Star Game has received home field advantage in the World Series. The AL currently has a 12-game unbeaten streak (including the tie game in 2002) and has had home field advantage for the World Series every year under the format.
