Tarence Kinsey Jr., a guard with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a former basketball star at Jefferson High School, has charged with driving under the influence, Tampa police say.

Kinsey, 25, of Tampa, was arrested at 3:38 a.m. today.

"We take matters like this very seriously," Cavaliers spokesman Tad Carper wrote in an e-mail to the Tribune. "We will speak with Tarence and continue to handle this internally while the judicial process takes its course."

Kinsey was first spotted heading north on Howard Avenue in a 2005 Bentley heading to Interstate 275. He was drifting in his lane and accelerated to 70 mph in a 55-mph zone on the interstate, police say.

An officer stopped him near the interstate and Dale Mabry Highway. Kinsey's eyes were watery and bloodshot, he was unsteady and smelled of alcohol, police say. He failed field sobriety tests and refused to take a breath test.

Kinsey played collegiately at the University of South Carolina. He went undrafted but made the Memphis Grizzlies in 2006. He also played professionally in Turkey.

He signed with the Cavaliers as a free agent in August 2008. In 50 regular season games this season, he averaged 2 points per game.

After his senior season at Jefferson in 2002, Kinsey was the Dragons' all-time leading scorer with 1,830 points. He was named the state's Class 4A player of the year and was a finalist for Florida's Mr. Basketball award.

Kinsey remains in Orient Road Jail. His bail is set at $500.
