For the first time at the University of South Florida, Coach Jim Leavitt's highest paid assistant will not be the defensive coordinator.
New offensive coordinator Mike Canales, who received a $50,000 raise after being promoted from wide receivers coach, is USF's top paid assistant at $200,000, followed by new defensive coordinator Joe Tresey ($190,000), according to salary figures released by the school.
The remainder of the 2009-10 salaries, that go into effect Wednesday, for USF's full-time assistants with last year's figures in parentheses: Carl Franks, running backs $170,000 ($150,000); John Hendrick, special teams $130,000 ($120,000); Mike Simmonds, co-offensive line $120,000 ($100,000); Larry Scott, co-offensive line $120,000 ($90,000) and Kevin Patrick, defensive line $120,000 ($70,000).
New assistants David Blackwell, linebackers/co-defensive coordinator, and Phil McGeoghan, wide receivers, will earn $160,000 and $80,000, respectively. It's unknown how the remaining $60,000 of Leavitt's $1.35 million assistants' salary pool will be distributed.
Men's basketball assistants - holdover Reggie Hanson and new additions Eric Skeeters and Jeremy Cox - will each receive $100,000. Tommy Tonelli, USF's director of basketball operations, is expected to receive the remaining $75,000 of Coach Stan Heath's $375,000 assistants' salary pool.
