The Rays pared down their camp roster significantly this afternoon, cutting 12 players. The list of those sent out includes a few top prospects and some who had been in competition for the fifth spot in the starting rotation.
Wade Davis was among the top young players sent out, and last year's No. 1 draft pick Tim Beckham was also on the list.
"I was just taking advantage of it, just soaking in as much as I could up here with the big leaguers," Beckham said. "I'm ready to get back down there [to minor-league camp] and start playing every day and everything I'm learning, just start putting it into effect."
Also headed out are two of the pitchers who were in competition for the final rotation spot: Carlos Hernandez and Mitch Talbot.
"Now that I'm going down, I've just got to continue to do what I've been doing here and work on the little things I didn't really think I got to work on over here because of all the competition," Hernandez said. "It's going to be great. This is what I was looking for - not going back to the minors, of course, but just to be here. So far, so good."
The rest of the cuts were: pitchers Jake McGee, Dale Thayer, Dewon Day, Jason Childers, Winston Abreu and Julio DePaula, catcher Matt Spring and infielder Chris Nowak.
Of the 12 cut today, Davis, Talbot, Thayer and McGee were optioned to Durham and the rest (all non-roster invitees) were reassigned to minor-league camp. The Rays now have 44 players officially remaining in major-league camp.
