NCAA wins temporary stay in FSU documents release

TALLAHASSEE --

The NCAA won't have to immediately release public records about Florida State University's appeal of an academic cheating penalty.

An appeals court Tuesday granted a temporary stay to the NCAA and gave attorneys for The Associated Press, The Tampa Tribune, TBO.com, News Channel 8 and other news organizations a day to show why the motion should not stand.

Circuit Judge John Cooper had ordered the NCAA to release documents related to Florida State's appeal of penalties to strip coaches and athletes of wins in 10 sports, including 14 from football coach Bobby Bowden.

Cooper said the NCAA's rationale for keeping the documents secret would "emasculate" Florida's broad public access laws.
