The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed versatile offensive lineman Sean Mahan today, the same day it was learned starting center Jeff Faine will miss several games with a triceps injury.
The Bucs also signed defensive end Tim Crowder, a former second-round draft pick who was recently released by the Denver Broncos.
Mahan, a seventh-year pro, can play center or guard. The Bucs could plug him into Faine's position, or move left guard Jeremy Zuttah to center and put Mahan at guard.
This is Mahan's third stint with the the Bucs. A fifth-round draft pick of the team in 2003, he went to Pittsburgh as a free agent in 2007 and was re-aquired by the Bucs in a trade prior to the 2008 season. He spent last season as a backup.
He played in three preseason games, but was released on Sept. 2.
Crowder entered the NFL as a second-round pick of the Broncos in the 2007. He has appeared in 19 games with one start, totaling 26 tackles, four sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He was released by the Broncos on Sept. 5.
Cornerback Kyle Arrington and defensive end Maurice Evans were released to make room on the 53-man roster for Mahan and Crowder. Also, punter A.J. Trapasso was released from the practice squad.
