The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are concerned about a left thumb injury suffered by safety Jermaine Phillips during Sunday's 33-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Phillips underwent X-rays on his thumb following the game and the Bucs will do more testing Monday morning to determine the extent of the problem.
An eight-year veteran, Phillips was credited with five tackles against Buffalo.
Tampa Bay planned to shift Phillips from safety to outside linebacker in 2009, but a four-game suspension levied by the NFL against safety Tanard Jackson spurred Coach Raheem Morris to return Phillips to the secondary, at least temporarily.
If Phillips is unable to play against the Giants at home Sunday, veteran Will Allen is likely to get the start at free safety.
