University of South Florida junior defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was named the Big East's defensive player of the week, the league announced today.
Pierre-Paul had four tackles, three tackles for loss, and a fumble caused in USF's victory at Florida State on Saturday. He led a defense that held the Seminoles to 19 yards rushing and 288 yards total offense.
The offensive player of the week honors went to Cincinnati receiver Mardy Gilyard, who had nine receptions for 177 yards and two TDs. He finished with 226 all-purpose yards.
Gilyard won the honor over USF quarterback B.J. Daniels, who became the first quarterback since 1986 to rush for more than 100 yards against Florida State. He also threw two touchdowns and finished with 341 yards total offense, third-most by a USF freshman.
