Former South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe has accepted an invitation to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' rookie camp, his father told the Lakeland Ledger newspaper on Monday night.
Grothe, the Big East Conference record-holder in total offense, had his senior season at USF cut short by a knee injury in the Bulls' third game last season.
His father said Grothe will report to the Bucs on Thursday, before the start of the three-day rookie minicamp on Friday.
Grothe broke Pat White of West Viginia's total offense mark in the second game last season and finished with 10,875 total yards. He totaled 8,669 passing yards and 52 touchdown passes, as well as 2,206 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.
Grothe, 6-foot and 205 pounds, is a graduate of Lake Gibson High in Lakeland. He had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee in September, but returned to the field for USF's pro day in early April.
The Bucs already have four quarterbacks on their roster -- Josh Freeman, Josh Johnson, Rudy Carpenter and undrafted rookie Jevon Snead of Ole Miss -- and Grothe appears to have little chance of making the team. He said after his surgery that he hoped to play in the Canadian Football League if he was unable to make an NFL roster.
