USF's Barrington jailed on license charge

University of South Florida sophomore linebacker Sam Barrington's fall camp has been plagued by a pair of shoulder injuries that have dropped him behind Mike Lanaris on the depth chart at middle linebacker.

Barrington now has another type of setback: a pair of arrests in the past two months tied to driving without a valid driver's license.

Barrington was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail at 8:25 p.m. for his latest driving-related legal trouble. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office website, Barrington was being held on two misdemeanor counts of driving without a valid license.

Barrington was at the Hillsborough County Jail this morning. His bail revoked was Judge Margaret Courtney.

Barrington was also arrested last month and charged with driving without a valid driver's license. That arrest took place near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Interstate 275 in Tampa. He was released after paying $250 bail.

Barrington, 19, of Jacksonville, was also arrested on the same charge a year ago. In May 2009, he turned himself in a month after he was pulled over. A university spokesman said he had a suspended license after failing to set up a court date related to unpaid parking tickets.

Barrington was not at practice Tuesday and USF coach Skip Holtz did not offer details on Barrington's latest legal trouble when asked about Barrington's lingering shoulder injury that kept him from participating in Saturday's scrimmage.

Holtz said Barrington also recently suffered a "tweak" in his right shoulder, which prevented him from scrimmaging.

"(Defensive coordinator Mark) Snyder came to me right before the scrimmage and said, 'I think we should hold him [out]. I don't think he's 100 percent.' That was more our decision that it was Sam's decision," Holtz said. "We'll just see how he turns and responds to everything."

However, when asked about the delay in releasing his depth chart, Holtz did allude to taking care of some off-the-field issues.

"There have been a lot of issues that I've been dealing with off the field," he said. "It's been a little busy."
