USF QB Daniels has shoulder surgery, to be limited in spring

University of South Florida sophomore quarterback B.J. Daniels, who started 10 games last season, won't be fully available during spring practice.

Daniels underwent successful surgery on his non-throwing shoulder Friday afternoon and is expected to need four to six weeks to recover, according to USF officials.

Daniels is expected to be there when spring practice starts March 16, but the Tallahassee native will not participate in contact drills and scrimmages, leaving a gaping hole at quarterback. Back-up quarterback Evan Landi, who planned to move to receiver prior to Skip Holtz's arrival, may have to remain at quarterback.

Daniels is expected to be fully recovered by the time voluntary summer workouts begin.

"We wish B.J. a full recovery," Holtz said in a statement. "As much as we would love for him to participate fully in spring practice, our number one objective is to make sure he has a complete and healthy recovery. I'm sure he wants to be out there going full bore with his teammates on a daily basis, but his participation in meetings and in practice will be very beneficial to his progress as a quarterback."

Daniels, after weeks of extensive rehab, needed surgery to repair a partial rotator cuff tear in his left shoulder that occurred during the Louisville game on Nov. 21.

Daniels threw for 1,983 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions his first season as the Bulls' starter, taking over in September when fifth-year senior Matt Grothe went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Daniels also rushed for a team-high 772 yards and nine touchdowns.

Notes

USF's spring game is tentatively scheduled for April 17 at Raymond James Stadium ... USF coach Skip Holtz will be at Stumps in Channelside from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday for USF's National Signing Day party. The event is free and open to the public. USF is selling season tickets at the event and will cover the tabs of first-time season-ticket buyers.
