Farmers report smaller strawberry crop after chill

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Florida farmers say this year's unusually cold winter has had a dramatic effect on the strawberry crop, leading to a smaller harvest and some grocery store shortages.

Ted Campbell, executive director of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association, tells The Ledger newspaper the cold weather has been a "financial disaster" for strawberry growers.

In one February week, the harvest was less than one-fifth the size of the same period last year.

Farmers say picking crews are working fewer hours and some grocery stores in the central Florida area have reported strawberry shortages in recent weeks.
