The University of South Florida baseball team hired former Major League pitching coach Chuck Hernandez to be its pitching coach, head coach Lelo Prado announced Tuesday.
Hernandez, a Tampa native with 31 years of pro experience as a player and coach, helped develop 2008 Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, three-time American League All-Star Justin Verlander and former All-Stars Chuck Finley, Kenny Rogers and Scott Kazmir.
Hernandez is the only Division I pitching coach to have served as a pitching coach at the major league level, according to the school. Prado believes that with Hernandez's addition, the Bulls will receive a major boost and the opportunity to recruit nationally at the highest level.
"It's going to be outstanding for recruiting," Prado said in a statement. "We can go into any home in America and say, 'You have a big-league pitching coach here that's going to develop you.' "
Hernandez was the pitching coach for the California Angels (1992-96), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2004-05) and Detroit Tigers (2006-08). He was the minor-league pitching coordinator for the Rays from 1997-2003.
