Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams had a bold message Thursday for Tampa Bay fans wondering what a 10-6 club can do for an encore.
"We're a young team, but we're guaranteeing the playoffs,'' said Williams, who was a finalist for the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year award, won by Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. "And if we get in the playoffs, we know we can do some damage.''
Williams credits quarterback Josh Freeman for much of his production as the fourth-round pick out of Syracuse caught 11 touchdown passes, easily setting a franchise record for rookies.
"I knew I could be successful, but not like this,'' Williams said at the Super Bowl media headquarters. "I knew I could be a help to the team, but Josh made it even better for me. It was Josh that did it.''
If the current labor agreement expires March 4 and owners institute a lockout, all players will be barred from using team facilities. According to Williams, the Bucs are thinking ahead.
"Hopefully there isn't a lockout, but if there is, I'll still be working,'' Williams said. "We've already planned a trip to somewhere real hot and Josh is going to get all the receivers down there.''
Williams is upset that Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris finished second to Bill Belichick of the Patriots in voting for Coach of the Year honors.
"I'm kind of mad,'' Williams said. "I think he (Morris) should have been first. He's been there, done that and he knows situations. He's so young (34), he can relate to what we're going through, the problems we have. You can't go and tell him no lie - he knows.''
