Bucs rookie RB Sims to have ankle surgery

— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to training camp this year with a deep contingent of running backs. Now, it looks like they’re going to need that depth.

Rookie Charles Sims, a third-round draft pick, is expected to miss 12-14 weeks because of a right ankle injury that occurred Tuesday and requires surgery, the team announced.

The Bucs have not said what the injury is, but that Sims will have surgery on Saturday.

Sims walked around in a protective boot on Thursday.

A West Virginia product with running and receiving skills, Sims was battling Bobby Rainey and Mike James for the opportunity to work behind projected starting running back Doug Martin.

He ran six times for 13 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards in the Bucs’ preseason opener at Jacksonville, a 16-10 loss.
