Three Plant City youths were among the age-group champions at the recent NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick sectional competition.
Jared Smith, Hunter Shuff and Chase Ricketts took part in the event, which was conducted at the training facility of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The trio were awaiting other sectional results to see whether the point totals would be good enough to qualify for the championship. That competition will be held at Raymond James Stadium during halftime of the Bucs' game with the New York Jets on Dec. 13.
Also qualifying for the sectional event, held Oct. 10, were Plant City's Ashton Sparkman (girls age 12-13) and Taylor Edgemon (10-11).
All of the Plant City participants play for Plant City Recreation & Parks Department/Optimist Youth Flag Football. The Optimist Club coordinated the competition.
The flag football season concludes this Saturday at Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex and the playoffs begin Monday in both the Senior League (8-9 year olds) and Premier League (10-12). Those two brackets along with the Elite League (13-15) will culminate in three playoff championship games, all scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. Nov. 7.
The Munchkin (4-5 year olds) and Junior (6-7) groups do not hold playoffs.
The Frogs stayed atop the Junior League standings with an 18-18 tie of the Rabbits on Oct. 17.
The most compelling race is in the Premier League, where through five weeks the Falcons, Vikings and Packers were all a perfect 5-0.
