For the second consecutive year, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon is celebrating "Thanks-mas" by cooking for the needy at area shelters.
Maddon, with the help of Tropicana Field executive chef Gary Brosi and a dozen helpers, began cooking more than 1,500 meatballs today for spaghetti dinners he will serve Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Bradenton, St. Petersburg and Tampa.
Maddon stirred huge tureens of sauce with a paddle and chopped spicy and sweet sausage for the meal.
Maddon marked the first Thanks-mas last year, serving several hundred people at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul shelter in St. Petersburg.
This year, meals for the three shelters will cost him more than $1,300.
