The Tampa Bay Lightning continue to act like sellers as the NHL trade deadline approaches, dealing forward Steve Downie in a three-team trade Tuesday that netted Tampa Bay a first-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
The Lightning also got a prospect, defenseman Sebastien Piche, in the trade that sent Downie to the Colorado Avalanche and saw defenseman Kyle Quincey go from Colorado to the Detroit Red Wings.
The Lightning traded Downie to the Avalanche for Quincey and then sent Quincey to the Red Wings in exchange for Detroit's first-round pick and Piche.
Tampa Bay traded Dominic Moore to the San Jose Sharks last Thursday and sent Pavel Kubina to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Those moves also brought the Lightning draft picks and a minor league prospect.
The Lightning now have two first-round picks in 2012 along with at least three and as many as four selections in the second round.
Downie has 12 goals and 16 assists so far this year and is eligible to become a restricted free agent after the season.
A first-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2005, Downie scored a career-best 22 goals for the Lightning during the 2009-10 season.
Piche, 6-foot, 202 pounds, has played in 42 career AHL games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, recording five assists. He signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in 2009.
Piche was assigned to the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.
