GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Scallop season is off to a good start according to the Homosassa Guides Association. Scallopers out of the Homosassa River are finding lots of the tasty shellfish 1 to 11/2 miles south of markers 6 and 8. Look for the fleet of boats.
Be very careful running your boat in the scallop area because it can get crowded. All boats must fly a dive flag when scalloping. A fishing license is needed when scalloping.
Early in the season the scallop shell is big but the meat is small. It will grow during the summer. Scallops also can be found off Crystal River and Bayport.
Plan your trip during the low tide for easy finding. For more information and regulations go to www.myfwc.com.
Captain Jim Long said the Homosassa fly rod tarpon season has been better than last year. There still are plenty of tarpon for fly rodders in places like Chassahowitzka Point, Black Rock and the Oklahoma Flats off Bayport.
Ginny McGucken, fishing with her husband Steve off Anna Maria, caught her first tarpon this week weighing an estimated 100 pounds. The battle took 30 minutes and the silver king was released after pictures and a DNA sample.
Trout fishing continues to be hot over the deep grass flats of Tampa Bay. Captain Billy Miller has been catching tarpon in the mornings and limiting out on big trout in the afternoon with a few oversized redfish mixed in.
Red snapper have been easy pickings in the deeper Gulf waters.
