Class 2A
Indian Rocks at Tampa Prep
Match Notes: The two met in the regular season on Nov. 29 with the Terrapins winning the match 2-0 with freshman Amber Miller scoring both goals for Tampa Prep. Tampa Prep was without a few starters for the game but Miller along with Megan Wall came through for the offense with Wall earning two assists.
Player to Watch: Junior midfielder Taylor Richardson has 27 assist on the season with five goals. Certainly the marquee of Tampa Prep is its speed up top with strikers Chelsea Klotz (52 goals) and Paige Goodwin (26 goals) but Richardson is every bit as aggressive with spot-on passing, great ball control and the ability to see and start runs. Terrapins coach Pam Smith points to Richardson's leadership on the field.
''She has great leadership skills,'' Smith said. ''She connects the offense and defense for this team.''
Oh, you haven't heard?: Goalkeeper Jordan Hatton has been solid in the box for Tampa Prep with 13 shutouts. Logging more than 1,000 minutes in goal this season for the Terrapins, the sophomore has allowed only four goals to get past her all season. Hatton also has a strong leg that gives the team a great start on offense switching the field when the ball is played back to her.
Cambridge at Shorecrest Prep
Match Notes: Malissa Gallogly, lovingly referred to by teammates as ''Googs'' has 22 goals this season for the Lancers and has a school record 106 goals in her four years at Cambridge. Senior forward Lara Theodore adds a lot of speed and great looks for Cambridge. Theodore has been plagued by some injuries this season but will be needed against Shorecrest.
Class 3A
Berkeley Prep at Fort Myers Bishop Verot
Match Notes: The Buccaneers are in for a challenge here as the Vikings are lead by senior Gina Petracco, who has 47 goals this season. Petracco has 11 games this season with a hat trick or better. For the Buccaneers, the team will need to focus on ball control to gain any control in this match.
Class 5A
Land O' Lakes at Bloomingdale
Match Notes: The Bulls defense was strong during the district tournament and after defeating Newsome 1-0 in the finals confidence was high for Bloomingdale. The Bulls' Nancy Davison scored the team's goal against the Wolves, as she did in the regular season 1-0 win on Dec. 4.
Players to Watch: Junior goal keeper Christina Coca was a ball hogging monster in the district final match against Newsome smothering any of the Wolves attempts that were near the target.
Oh, you haven't heard?: Aileen Herrara had a tough job in the district final marking the Wolves Ana Cate and the junior did a strong job. Look for more to come from a defense that will need to be strong for the Bulls to succeed.
Newsome at River Ridge
Match Notes: The Wolves looked shocked after the loss in the finals of the district tournament to Bloomingdale and Newsome will need to follow through on runs and finish better as the regions begin. But Newsome is very capable team with a ton of strengths including senior forward Kellie Fowke, whose 15 goals lead the way for the Wolves. Also the aggressiveness of midfielder Ana Cate is apparent every time the junior takes the pitch.
East Lake at Hillsborough
Match Notes: Hillsborough handed Plant its first loss of the season in the district final and will enter the playoffs with a tough test with East Lake.
Players to Watch: Freshman forward Alexa Morse put up six goals in the last two games and also freshman forward Meagan Nelson has come through with goals when need and the two play seamlessly together.
Oh, you haven't heard?: The Terriers have had a tough run this season with the loss of two head coaches, but assistant principal Mike Wood has stepped in big for the team and it looks confident and ready for the regions.
Plant at Palm Harbor University
Match Notes: This will be the toughest test of the season for the Panthers. Palm Harbor University has a tough offense setup and run through senior midfielder Shannon Healy who spreads the ball around nicely. For the Panthers, Lexi Rakestraw will bring a lot of speed to the offense. The team has had some injuries and will need Molly Ganther to be back to full strength after a broken toe on her right foot has hampered her late in the season.
