Sarasota Sophs Help Stop Durant

Sarasota High's sophomore-filled backfield put on a show on homecoming, accounting for all three touchdowns Friday night in the Sailors' 21-16 victory against mistake-prone Durant in a Class 6A-District 6 game at Ihrig Field.

Sophomore running back Artavious Curry ran for 134 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Desmond Hurley rushed for a pair of touchdowns.

Sophomore quarterback Sean Hurley completed just enough passes (4-for-7, 73 yards with two interceptions) to keep Durant's defense honest.

But Durant (3-3) almost stole the game with a late comeback.

Cougars sophomore quarterback Je'Twan Smith threw a 70-yard TD pass to junior John Hicks with 2:26 left to cut into Sarasota's 21-10 lead.

But Sailors defensive back Kurt Chupp broke up the 2-point conversion pass attempt. Then the Sailors recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

The Cougars were victimized by 11 penalties for 90 yards.

"We made too many mistakes, too many penalties," Durant coach Mike Gottman said.

Booker's defense dominated the Class 3A-District 11 game. Casey Gross and the Booker defensive line sacked Bobby Eveld six times as seniors Andre Hobbs Jr. and Cazavious Ray each caught an interception. Eveld finished 15-for-25 for 134 passing yards.

The Tornadoes (4-1, 1-0) limited the Tigers (4-2, 1-1) to just 6 yards on 16 carries while Jesuit never got within 15 yards of the end zone. Senior Greg Dupell was tops for Jesuit with 28 yards on seven touches.

Booker senior quarterback Brock Waters connected on a 12-yard scoring pass to Tim Chestnut in the first quarter to give the Tornadoes a 7-0 lead.

On Booker's opening possession of the second half, Waters found Charles Purvis for another 12-yard scoring strike to cap a 12-play, 67-yard drive.

Mick Stoner added a 40-yard field goal on the next drive to make it 17-0.
