Baseball: Jesuit loses season finale

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Sarasota's Eric Williams turned in a near-perfect pitching performance to end Jesuit's bid for a perfect season.

The senior right-hander fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts as the Sailors dealt the Tigers a 7-0 loss in their regular-season finale, the first loss of the season for the nation's top-ranked team.

"He's been our go-to guy all year long," Sarasota coach Clyde Metcalf said of Williams. "He's very capable of going out and shutting down good hitters when he does what he did tonight, which is throw all three pitches for strikes and keep the ball down in the zone."

Williams carried a no-hitter into the fourth before Jimmy Falla broke it up with a two-out single to right. The only other hit for the Tigers (23-1) was Greg Dupell's infield single with one out in the seventh. While Williams also walked four, he never allowed a runner to reach scoring position.

The Sailors got all the offense they needed in the first, scoring three runs.

"Twenty-three-and-one is a great regular season," Jesuit coach Richie Warren said. "Whether we lost the first game or the 15th game, we'd be pretty high right now if we were 23-1. It just stinks that we lost the last one."
