Softball: Cowboys Capitalize On Mustangs' Errors

Gaither softball coach Laura Wolf had to keep her squad focused on the finer points of Thursday night's game at Mitchell.

No, her team didn't score any earned runs, and it struck out 11 times. But when the opportunity presented itself, the Cowboys crossed the plate anyhow.

Gaither took advantage of four Mitchell errors and won 4-2 to sweep the regular-season series.

"We definitely have to capitalize on everything that we can," Wolf said. "When there is an error or anything, we have to focus on the details at this point and they're doing everything they need to do. ... We're staying very focused and we had a talk about that at the beginning of the season."

That focus was key after Mitchell (6-4) went ahead 1-0 in the second inning when Sara Brock's fister just over first base scored Olivia Kline from third.

Back-to-back fielding errors by Mitchell loaded the bases for Gaither (8-2) in the top of the fourth. Two batters later, an infield pop dropped, allowing pinch-runner Lena Rovellada and Meghan McGrath to score, pushing the Cowboys ahead 2-1.

An inning later, an errant Mitchell throw to first base with runners on second and third allowed Alexis Mallow and Amanda Bueno to score, making it 4-1.

"They have to learn from it," Mitchell coach Scott Bisbe said. "The biggest thing is, in the field, they have to talk."
