On a night when Alonso pitcher Thomas Dorminy had a tough act to follow, he almost topped it.
On Thursday, Ray Delphey pitched a no-hitter at St. Petersburg, and Dorminy almost matched it Friday. He allowed only two hits in a 2-0 win at Gaither and was in control throughout the game. He struck out 10 to lead Alonso (10-0).
Dorminy said he wasn't concerned about the team's undefeated streak.
"I just felt strong and wasn't looking at our record," Dorminy said. "All I want to do is the best I can.
"I don't pay attention to the rest."
Dorminy pitched out of a jam in the second when he had two runners on base, and it was smooth sailing after that. Alonso coach Landy Faedo said even he wasn't aware if Alonso had ever started a season with 10 wins.
"I had no idea," Faedo said. "We are pretty strong with our pitching and I think this just happened to be Thomas' turn. It's been that way all year, but I need to check the record books to see if it's been this long."
Alonso got only two hits off Gaither pitchers Austen Thrailkill and Dylan Hathcock, but they were enough. Dorminy led off the second inning with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Chris Mejia. Casey Smit was hit by a pitch and Adam Pendleton bunted both runners into scoring position. Mejia scored on an error and Brandon Johnson sacrificed the second run home.
Gators Snap Losing Streak
PORT RICHEY - Land O' Lakes coach Cal Baisley didn't sound like someone who had just seen his team's three-game losing streak come to an end.
But his Gators (8-4) converted four Ridgewood errors into seven unearned runs in an 8-4 Class 5A-District 7 victory Friday night at Ridgewood's Larry Beets Field.
"Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy," Baisley said after a lengthy meeting with his team. "We're struggling. We're not crisp at home plate. We're not crisp on defense. We're walking people ... beating ourselves. Here we are, two outs in the last inning, and we end up in a nail-biter."
Ridgewood (4-9) did its best to make a game of it in the bottom of the seventh. After Gators starter Zach May got two quick outs, he hit Jay Mattos and Mike Vavasis and gave up a single to Tarvis Gall to score Mattos.
"I had told May he was coming out before the start of the seventh inning if anyone got on base. Then he got two outs. I really wanted him to finish the game," Baisley said. "But once he got two guys on, I decided to make the change."
Closer Austin Aubuchon entered and gave up an infield single to load the bases, but got Luke Mathews to fly to right for his fifth save.
