Pasco starting pitcher Colena Lazar tossed her fourth shutout of the season as the Pirates defeated Land O' Lakes, 6-0. Lazar gave up six hits and struck out nine in what had been a highly anticipated matchup.
"That's Colena. She wants the ball in her hand in these types of games," Pirates coach Shamalene Broner said.
The game was still scoreless in the fourth inning when Lucy Schneider stepped to the plate for Pasco (15-1). Although she struck out, Schneider fouled off a slew of pitches and seemed to tire out Gators starting pitcher Kasey Murray. Broner smelled blood, "After Lucy's plate appearance in the fourth Murray seemed to be tired, and I told my players to attack."
A bases-loaded walk gave Pasco a 1-0 lead before the Pirates blew the game open in the fifth inning. With Murray tiring for the Gators (11-2), Pasco scored four runs, two of which were driven in on a double by Schneider, to take control.
