HUDSON - Stacey Swezey and Katy McGee have more in common than just being Hudson High soccer teammates. The two defensive sweepers have played side-by-side on club and school teams since they were eight years old. On Friday, they sat side-by-side as their families and coaches watched them sign national letters-of-intent.
Both plan on attending Lees-McRae College, a Division II school located in northwestern North Carolina. Last month, the two visited the campus and worked out with the soccer team. Both have 3.8 GPAs and had received interest from more than 20 colleges.
"Lees-McRae has a good Sports Management program, which will open doors for me to become a coach or trainer," said Swezey. "Plus, the campus is so pretty in the middle of the woods and all the soccer players dorm together."
McGee plans to major in elementary education, focusing on math. "I loved the tranquil and hilly setting of the campus and the opportunities to continue with my education and soccer," she said.
Over the summer, both intend to take part in a rigorous weekly training program that includes passing and shooting plus two days of running. Both credit their parents and coaches for their success.
First year Cobra soccer coach Stephen Jones looked on during the signing process. "It's extremely exciting for the athletes, the school and the soccer program," he said.
"Their winning attitudes gave our younger players confidence. Both were co-captains and demonstrated selfless leadership."
