Before the District 9 flag football tournament began, all the coaches agreed that seeding didn't mean much.
Any of the four qualifying teams could win against each other on any given night.
Monday night's semifinals proved the coaches right.
Final scores: Newsome 7, Spoto 0; East Bay 7, Bloomingdale 6.
Newsome (8-1) had to fight until the final 30 seconds before finally breaking through for a touchdown, a 25-yard pass from Megan Knight to Emma Shelley in the end zone's left corner.
Before that, the Wolves threatened with three drives inside Spoto's 10-yard line only to stall on downs. Spoto (5-5) pushed only one drive inside Newsome's 20-yard line.
In the late game, host East Bay (10-2) scored on a first-quarter 70-yard drive. The touchdown, a 1-yard pass Janielle Rodriguez, was set up by a 30-yard completion to Delaney Poli, who also caught the crucial extra point.
Bloomingdale (7-3) scored in the second quarter when Elaine Owens returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. East Bay, however, slapped down the extra point to preserve the one-point lead, which proved crucial in advancing to the district championship game.
