After losing head football coach Jason Strunk to Purdue University, the Plant City Raiders have gotten something in return from the Boilermakers.
Last week the school announced that Neal Tull, who worked on the Purdue staff last year, has been named one of the top assistants for Plant City.
"We flip-flopped with them, it's funny how it worked out," Plant City Athletic Director Traci Durrance said.
The "swap" was purely coincidental. Durrance said Tull responded to the school's posting of the assistant position before Strunk, who was the Raiders' head coach the last two seasons, took the job as an assistant at Purdue.
"From that first contact we tried to do everything we could to get Coach Tull in here," she said.
Durrance must have presented a good case because Tull was born in Lafayette, Ind., where Purdue is located.
Tull, 25, persevered as a player at Purdue and finally earned a scholarship in his fifth and final year of eligibility. He joined the Boilermakers as a walk-on defensive tackle in 2003 but did not play. Tull got into three games as a backup in his sophomore season.
By his senior season in 2007, Tull was converted to center. He was the recipient of the team's award for unselfishness and dedication.
Durrance also said last week that the Raiders have a new boys soccer coach, former University of Tampa standout Justin Throneberg.
